New Students
Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics! Our immediate goal is to assist you in starting your studies of mathematics and statistics successfully in the appropriate courses with the knowledge of how these courses fit in with your academic goals and career plans.
Before the start of classes, you should have an advising session with Student Academic Services of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. You will have taken a diagnostic quiz, and we assume you have followed the suggestions in the feedback to fill in any gaps in your preparation to take our courses. You will also register for courses at that time. If you are in an honours program, these math/statistics courses are part of our Common Core.
Some students make the transition to math/statistics courses at York smoothly with instant success. However, many students need advice and/or assistance. We have a number of ways to help you meet these challenges. We also have clubs where you can make new friends with common interests and engage in a variety of activities.
Mathematics and statistics comprise many different disciplines, and we have designed programs in each of them. Read about our programs for information on the program you have selected.
Courses and programs in mathematics and statistics prepare you for success in a variety of careers. At this early stage in your studies, it is important to verify that your courses and programs are appropriate to your career goals.
Feel free to bring any questions you may have to our Undergraduate Office.
